“Ghostcrawler” the lead systems designer came to the official battlenet page and offered the current thoughts on account wide achievements.
All I can say, is that I’m relieved.
- Most achievements are account-wide
- Most criteria are not account-wide
- Some achievements are “meta achievements.”
- A few achievements are account-only.
- We hope that rewards granted from achievements (pets, mounts, titles, and tabards) will be shared at the account level.
So let’s meditate a moment on all the wisdom that has been granted to us.
1. Most achievements are account-wide
This we’ve already seen on the beta. There are faction specific achievements that aren’t (and won’t) go account wide, but for the most part, if your Gnome Warlock has “Get to the Choppa” then so will your Horde Pandaran Monk.
If you still hit an achievement on an alt, you’ll still get the pop-up. For instance completing Deadmines for the first time on your new Monk. It won’t push your achievement score any higher though.
2. Most criteria are not account-wide
This was also one of those ‘herp derp’ moments, but it was nice to see it finally in writing. Complete half the bosses in Firelands on character X and the other half of the bosses on character Y? Nope, no achievement ding for you. Go through it all once on one toon, then flip to your alts to help the cause later. Everyone else in your guild will be in the same boat. They’ll understand.
3. Some achievements are “meta achievements.”
Those of us that have been hunting achievements for a while are familiar with the term. Explore Kalimdor, What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been, Loremaster of Cataclysm are all examples. You just got Explore Durotar on your Orc and your Tauren scored Explore Felwood ages ago? You’re two steps closer to Explore Kalimdor on your account, not one step per character.
They also note that What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been is universal. So if you complete one holiday on one character and a different holiday on another alt you’re still going to get your purple drake. It also means if you already have the achievement, you get it on everybody like I already noticed.
4. A few achievements are account-only.
Now here’s brand new potential. What about a ‘Max every profession’ or ‘Get every class to 90′? They also give examples of hitting 250k honorable kills or 2500 daily quests. The only question left on this one is will they be retroactive? As I log into each of my characters once Mists hits will it take and add together some of these kinds of achievements to see if I’ve hit the goal yet or not? Time will tell, something tells me this will come later as a tweak and improvement but won’t be live in 5.0.
5. We hope that rewards granted from achievements (pets, mounts, titles, and tabards) will be shared at the account level.
They do stress that the word of the day on this one is hope. Why? Because what they’re doing is a massive overhaul of their current achievement system. There are going to be bugs, some of your alts may not walk away with every achievement on 5.0 launch. It’s going to happen.
But look forward to it. I know I am.
